A friend of mine says that he thinks my cambelt may be due for replacement. How do I check?

The answer is YES to both!

Do you recommend fitting winter tyres and if so, should I keep them on all year?

Winter tyres are not just for snow and icy conditions,they also provide higher levels of road safety on cold, damp road surfaces too.

We will be happy to discuss the pro’s and con’s of fitting winter tyres, just contact one of our technicians for advice.

However, we do not suggest that you keep them on your vehicle all the time, as they will wear too quickly.

How do I know if my clutch requires attention?

The revs keep climbing but there is little increase in vehicle speed.

Loss of acceleration as the clutch ‘slips’ or a complete loss of drive.

Difficulty changing gears.

Grinding or rattling noise when changing gears.

Engine revs climb or fall of their own accord.

If you are not sure whether your clutch is defective, just contact us and we will take a look for you.

How do I know you will only carry out necessary repairs?

We have no ‘hard sell’ tactics, only essential work will be carried out with your permission.

Any parts removed from your vehicle will be made available for you to view and inspect on collection.

So having received an estimate of the repair costs, you can proceed with confidence.

How long would you expect a clutch to last and is it effected by the way I drive?

Something like 60,000 to 80,000 miles, depending on driving style and vehicle type.

It is very difficult to be specific on this point as the driving style can make a huge difference to the life of the clutch.

How often do I need to take my car for an MOT and when is the first inspection due?

All vehicles need an MOT test when they are 3 years old (from new) and thereafter every year.

The exception to this is ambulances and taxis and private passenger vehicles and ambulances which are required to take the test every year.

I have a flashing warning light on my dash, is there a problem?

We can soon tell whether you have a serious problem or something just needs a simple adjustment.

Call one of our technicians, explain the circumstances of the flashing warning light, and he may wish to book the vehicle in for a Diagnostic Check so that we can identify the cause for you.

I run a small business, do I qualify for a Multi-Car Account?

Any company based within 10 miles of Basingstoke qualifies for inclusion in the scheme, as long as they have at least 5 vehicles.

Just contact us and we will be happy to develop an annual contract giving you as much assistance as you require – from annual servicing, to free pickup and delivery of vehicles, plus the use our free courtesy car option.

If I choose TLC to repair my car, is there any form of guarantee on the parts and workmanship?

Yes, TLC Autocentres offer a full warranty on the work undertaken, including parts and labour.

This warranty is for 12 months or 12,000 miles whichever is the sooner. (NB warranty only applies to parts if they are supplied by TLC Autocentres)

If my aircon. is not working, what is the most common cause and how difficult is it to repair?

The main problem with most air conditioning units is an insufficient amount of refrigerant.

The smooth working of an aircon. unit is made possible by the refrigerant being pumped through the system. If the refrigerant’s pressure reduces, the system will not operate correctly, if at all.

Topping up the refrigerant is not very expensive. We can easily give you a quote, just pop into the workshop.

My car is still under Warranty, can TLC service it?

EU legislation changes the way in which vehicles may be serviced and repaired, giving motorists more freedom in their decision as to who should look after their cars.

TLC Autocentres will be happy to service your car whilst still under guarantee, without affecting the manufacturer’s warranty.

What does an MOT Certificate confirm?

The MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test, without dismantling it, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by law.

It doesn’t mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the length of time the certificate is valid. The MOT certificate is also no guarantee of the general mechanical condition of your vehicle. The test doesn’t cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Everyone who uses a vehicle on the road must keep it in a roadworthy condition. The MOT test checks that vehicles meet road safety and environmental standards.

The first MOT test for a vehicle is required when it’s three years old. There are different rules if it’s used as a taxi.

What is the minimum legal tread depth on a tyre?

Cars, light vans and light trailers MUST have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference.

Tyres MUST be correctly inflated to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification for the load being carried.

Always refer to the vehicle’s handbook or data.

Tyres should also be free from certain cuts and other defects.

Why is my air conditioning system not cold?

There are many reasons why the air conditioning in your car is no longer cold, and in the majority of cases, it’s because your system is low on refrigerant.
